What is networking and why is it important?

One definition of networking is an “informally interconnected group or association of people (such as friends or professional colleagues).” So, in a way, we all already have a network - starting with our friends and family which I’d say are essential, to support you in your life.

Your professional network operates in a similar way. A strong professional network keeps you updated on your industry, provides new collaborators, clients and jobs.

And it should be fun!

Who should I network with?

Anyone you want!

Start by making a list of 10 people or companies you admire in your industry and ask yourself why and what this interaction could look like. These should give you a good starting point.

Or do the opposite and ask yourself: ‘What could I offer to my community?’ That will lead to new connections effortlessly.

How do I network like a pro?

Be real. Be direct. Be polite.

One of the best ways to approach networking is to be actually curious about people. Does that person seem like someone you’d like to be friends with and learn more about their lives? Then make sure you're also giving something to the relationship.

Do you have any favourite conversation starters?

IRL I like to ask people if they’re a coriander hater or not! That tends to be polemic enough to start a conversation.

What is the most common misconception about networking?

That it's a cold exchange of what you want and what you can give in return. It shouldn't be anymore than connecting with interesting individuals who add value to your professional community. Whether they are always sharing great articles and insights or always know the best jobs out there, look beyond just collaborators and prospective clients.
