Show personality in your portfolio

Pitching your creative abilities, thinking and personality in a pdf isn’t easy. So if you are struggling - you’re not alone!

Now more than ever, your portfolio doesn’t just need to sell your skills to secure an interview, but you as a person too. With any luck, these tips will help showcase the human behind the screen!

01: Figure out what makes you unique

It sounds cliche, but there’s only one of you. And conveying what makes you unique, will really set you apart. What are you fucking great at? What gets you going? Don’t say you love making books, say why you love making books.

02: Show the work that shows you

Don’t be afraid to show your side project in your portfolio. This gives the employer a great insight into what it is that you’re really passionate about. Ambition and self-discipline are hugely attractive personality traits.

03: Write the same way you think

Don’t fall into the trap of simply describing your work. Write passionately about why you chose x over y and what your creative decisions meant to the outcome of a project. All of course, in your tone of voice. Not your overtly-formal or comedic portfolio alter-ego.

04: The medium is the message

The manner in which you package your portfolio also speaks volumes. Whether it's a zine or an interactive game, this can act as another project in itself.

People hire people.

Your work is just one box as part of a wider process. The main question every employer asks themselves is ‘Do I really want to spend 8 hours a day with this person?’. Now dust those digital cobwebs off and don’t be afraid to be yourself!
